Model 514 Spectroscopy Amplifier

MODEL 514 SPECTROSCOPY AMPLIFIER
  • Bipolar Gated Baseline Restorer accepts Active and PuIse Feedback Preamps
  • Built-in Pileup Rejector provides Deadtime Correction and Reject Outputs
  • Automatic or Manual BLR Threshold Selection, with Setup Monitor Lamp
  • Wide Range Gain and active Shaping Controls

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Model 514 Spectroscopy Amplifier incorporates the most recent advances in spectroscopy amplifier design. The ease with which the operator can optimize spectroscopy system performance is implied by the uncluttered front panel layout. For example, the normally tedious procedure of optimizing a gated baseline restorer is greatly simplified in the Model 514 by AUTO threshold circuitry and MONITOR lamp. Also included is factory preset pulse optical reset signal sense circuitry for no-fuss use with pulse optical feedback preamplifiers.

The amplifier design incorporates a unique active filter network, which results in a nearly symmetrical unipolar output and only one uncancelled pole (50 msec). A built-in Pileup rejector virtually eliminates tail pulse pileup distortion in gated MCA systems.

A BUSY output is also provided for Live Time correction when gated with the MCA system clock.

INPUT / OUTPUT
Signal Input: Positive or negative tail puIses, ±12V maximum ±O.5V Iinear. Decay time constant range; 40 usec to 3 msec. Rise time min 20 msec. Input impedance » 500 ohm a-c coupled. Front and rear panel BNC (UG1094/U).
Powered Input: Provides -24V d-c thru 1 Kohm and a-c coupling to Signal lnput. Used with MTN Series 400 and 450 Preamplifiers.
Unipolar Output: Positive-gaussian shaped pulse, linear to +10 V (+12V sat.). Prompt or delayed, d-c restored. D-c level adjustable to ± 200mV. Front and rear panel BNC (UG1094/U) provide dual 93 ohm sources with 250:1 common mode isolation.
Bipolar Output: Prompt bipolar pulse (positive lobe leading) linear to ±10V (±12V sat.); gnd. referenced. Front and rear panel BNC (UG 1094/U) provide dual 93 ohm sources with 250:1 common mode isolation.
Busy Output: Positive 5V logic pulse for the duration that the Unipolar Output pulse exceeds the baseline restorer discriminator (BLD) threshold, 50 ohms, d-c coupled. Rear panel BNC (UG1094/U).
Pile-up Output: Positive 5V logic pulse is present when the pile-up detection logic detects a pile-up event. Pulse duration is 5 times shaping time. 50 ohms d-c coupled. Rear panel BNC (UG1094/U).
Preamp power: Rear panel Amphenol 17-10090 provides decoupled ± 12V, ±24V and gnd.
CONTROLS
Coarse Gain: Front panel 6 pos. switch Detects gains from 20 to 1000 in 2-5-10 sequence.
Fine Gain: Front panel 10-turn control provides continuous gain multiplier of 1 to 2.5.
Shaping: Front panel 5 pos. switch selects time constants of 0.5, 1, 2, 4 or 8 usec.
Pole/Zero: Front panel 15 turn trimmer sets pole/zero cancellation for input decay times from 40 usec to infinity.
Input Polarity: Front panel toggle switch selects either Pos. of Neg. input polarity.
BLR MODE: Three pos. switch selects restoration rate; HI or, LO, and an OUT position to facilitate P/Z adjustment.
BLD: Front panel toggle switch selects the source of threshold bias for the baseline restorer gate. ln AUTO, the threshold is automatically set as a function of amplifier gain and system noise levels. In ADJ, the threshold bias is manually set by the (0-0.5V) 15-turn trimmer pot.
MON: Front panel LED provides a convenient check of AUTO threshold operation and simplifies accurate adjustment in the manual ADJ Mode.
Prompt/Delayed: Front panel toggle switch selects Unipolar output to be Prompt or Delayed 1.6 usec.
DC: Front panel 15-turn trimmer pot. adjusts Unipolar baseline between ±250 mV.
PERFORMANCE
Gain Range: Continuously adjustable from 20 to 2500
Gain Stability: ±0.0075%/° C
D-C Stability: Unipolar; ±50uV/° C

Bipolar; ± 100uV/° C

Operating Temp.: 0° C to 50° C
Integral Nonlinearity: ±0.05% to +10V unterminated or +5V terminated.
Pulse Shaping: Gaussian approximation one differentiator (two for bipolar) and three active filter integrators. Peak time 2.2 shaping time (Unipolar).
