Model 511 Photon Discriminator

MODEL 511 PHOTON DISCRIMINATOR
  • Fast Amplifier-Discriminator for Single Photon Counting Applications
  • 18 Nanosecond Resolving Time at all Sensitivities
  • Unique Gain/Threshold Control provides 30 microvolt to 20 millivolt Threshold Range
  • NIM Fast Negative and Slow Positive Outputs provided

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Mech-Tronics Model 511 combines a fast variable gain amplifier and adjustable threshold discriminator in a single width NIM module. Both fast negative (32 ma, 10 nsec.) and slow positive (4 volt, 40nsec.) discriminator outputs assure compatibility with NIM counting instrumentation. The low level input accepts the negative charge output of available electron multipliers, photomultipliers and channel electron multipliers. Because true gain controls, and not attenuators, are used in the amplifier section, electronic noise is constant, independent of sensitivity and well below threshold.

INPUT / OUTPUT
Negative Input: Front panel BNC (UG1094/U) accepts negative charge output of detector. Gnd referenced, d.c. coupled and overvoltage protected to ±100 volts. Input impedance is 50
Fast Negative Output: Two front panel BNC connectors (UG1094/U) provide negative 32 mA (total) current pulse 10 nsec FWHM into external load. Nominal external load 50 ohms; maximum external load; open circuit.
Slow Negative Output: Two rear panel BNC connectors (UG1094/U) provide positive 4 volt 40 nsec voltage pulse; gnd. referenced. Impedance is 50 ohms ±5%.
PERFORMANCE - AMPLIFIER SECTION
Maximum Gain: 1600.
Rise Time: 5 nsec at minimum gain, 7 nsec at maximum gain.
Gain Stability: 0.1%/°C.
Dynamic Range: 1 volt negative.
Gain Control: True gain control via front panel 4 position switch in X 4 steps from 25-1600.
Pulse Shape: None. Determined by detector collection characteristics and output time constants. Typically a tail pulse with 2-10 nsec time constant.
Output: Internally connected to discriminator thru Shottky diode restorer.
PERFORMANCE - DISCRIMINATOR SECTION
Resolving Time: 16 nsec typical, 18 nsec maximum.
