GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Model 400 Preamplifier is a General Purpose instrument intended for use in a wide variety of nuclear measurement systems. It essentially consists of a two transistor bootstrapped charge integrator circuit and a H.V. decoupling network.

The Model 401 Preamplifier features a low-noise FET transistor input circuit and is intended for Proportional Counter, X-Ray Scintillation and Semi-conductor detector applications.

Both preamplifiers are inverting, highly linear and have fast rise time characteristics. Their preamp decay time constant is 50 microseconds, matching the pole-zero cancelled first differentiator in Mech-Tronics' main amplifiers, and derive their operating power from the main amplifier through the single BNC cable interconnection which also transfers the signal.

Impedance: Effectively zero ohms.
OUTPUT
Polarity: Inversion of the input.
Impedance: 50 ohms.
PERFORMANCE
Conversion Gain: Model 400: 30 millivolts/picocoulomb.

Model 401: 100 millivolts/picocoulomb

Noise: Model 400: 16 x 10-16 coulomb rms., with 50 pf. input capacitance and main amplifier 1st clip and integrate time constants of 1.5 microseconds.

Model 401: 2 x 10-16 coulomb rms., with 10 pf. shunt capacitance and main amplifier 1st clip and integrate time constants of 1.5 microseconds.

Saturation Level: +8 volts; -2.5 volts. Open circuit measurement.
Rise Time: 40 Nanoseconds.
Integral Linearity: Within 0.1% to +4 volts or -1 volt.
High Voltage: 2800 volts d.c. maximum for detector.
High Voltage Filter: Model 400: 100K, 0.005µf.

Model 401: 1M, 0.005µf.

Blocking Capacitor: 0.005µf.
Test Input: Accepts output from pulse generator through a 4.7 pf. NPO capacitor (2.2 pf. NPO for Model 401).
CONNECTORS
High Voltage Input: Accepts high voltage to be furnished to PM tube. Gremar No. 7096. (BNC connector available upon request.)
Output: Connects output pulses to main amplifier, and accepts preamplifier operating voltage from amplifier, BNC type UG1094A/U.
Test Input: Pulse generator input connector. BNC type UG1094A/U.
Cable Supplied: 72 inch Signal Cable (BNC to BNC) Part No. 186300-72.
